Why study geography? Geography is far more than finding a place on a map!
It includes the interconnections between peoples and their environment. This course will explore the five recognized themes of geography: Location, place, human-environment interaction, movement, and region. Life is an adventure and students know that the world is in constant change. That is what makes them so curious. Each week we will explore our planet by looking at maps, videos, and having discussions to learn how mankind continues to adapt on this amazing globe. Of course, we will learn the seven continents, as well as individual countries and current events. As we look more closely our world, we will consider how people function in relationship with the earth. Our books for the year will include: 1) TRAIL GUIDE and 2) WORLD ATLAS: -Trail Guide to World Geography, (Downloadable: Jr.High school version) ***OR*** -Trail Guide to World Geography, (Downloadable: High school version) >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Please use this version of Atlas: -World Atlas, Know Geography, Rand McNally Grades 9-12 Then for the Spring! We will add another book to tie everything we've learned in the Spring -Around the World in 80 Days by Jules Verne will test their knowledge as they travel around the world with Phileas Fogg! How does geography affect culture? Geography considers how people unite to live productively together. Customs and culture cause people to congregate around beliefs, characteristics and physical aspects. Geography can give valuable insight into current events. Boundaries may have been determined as a result of political actions, and may still affect their culture today. Past events can affect people and cause them to need to move location. We will look at examples of where this has happened. Geography considers the changing environment. Weather affects life in different parts of the world. Living where there is the ability to supply food to their people requires knowledge of the weather conditions (i.e. which foods grow best in those regions, caring for healthy livestock, etc.) What are the natural resourced of the areas (ie. various minerals, oil, salt, etc and where is the water supply for them? Objectives: Throughout the year the students will produce their own Atlas Journal as they become proficient with the atlas and online resources, such as Google Earth. We will be making maps and learning to read them, become familiar with nations and what distinguishes them from each other, and have interactive discussions and group projects. This class promises to open more windows to the world. |
